The weather can play a vital role in emphasising the feel, the emotional texture of a scene.  For example; if you’re characters are in a haunted house and they step outside into glorious warm sunshine then the mood of the scene kind of amplifies the ending of the fear/ horror the house had conveyed. Whereas most usually the characters would step out into the midst of a lightning storm in the dead of night. Why? Because its creepier and encompasses the uneasy feeling from within the haunted house, continuing the thrill theme.
Weather as a theme to enhance a scene should never be neglected as it is a very useful tool to help emphasise the mood of a scene and the feelings stirring within characters.
Always remember that you need to use the five scenes to help the reader to relate, even when writing weather. For instance; the smell of charred tarmac from a fork of lightening’s strike not a moment before. The taste of salt in the raindrops that fall soaking everything below in the fringed gloss of rain.
So, don’t get complacent about the weather when writing, upgrade it to make it work for you in a scene you feel should have more mood.
