INTERVIEW WITH ILLUSTRATOR

I thought it might be interesting to ask the illustrator of my cover, Blaze’s picture and the name illustrations, I use, a few questions. (Note she is the illustrator only – the text was applied after).
Okay, so Caroline-
-What did you have to take into consideration when creating Blaze as an illustration?
I wanted to approach the whole of her character, so I decided to show her forms morphing in three steps. Which meant I had to do a lot of research to find the perfect, morphable horse breed that echoed the characters personality. It turned out that Blaze was best suited with Arabian horse’s as they are very proud and majestic. Then I had to get the perfect angle on the morph so that it came across as such and not just three images side by side. I also had to incorporate similar features throughout the morph process so that Blazes morph actually looked similar to each other, whilst keeping true to Carrie’s visualisation of the character and incorporating the character personality. I found this whole process challenging, but absolutely loved it. As I’m always up for a challenge.
-What is your preferred medium and why?
Pastel pencils. Sometimes I like to add soft pastels or acrylic to illustrations too. I love to get a feeling of texture in my work and believe this helps transmit the emotional feel of an illustration.
-Do you think symbolism was the right way to go for the cover?
In this case symbolism seemed to be an ideal solution when talking to Carrie. As she expressed her visualisation of the cover to incorporate the different aspects of the characters in the book as well as creating an appeal to both genders at a YA level.
