EXPLORE THE ‘HERO’ WITH ME
Classically all fantasy novels would admit to one
Hero within their character line up. Often the writer creates these ‘hero’s’
with specific characteristics and abilities; a stereo typical structure of a
Hero if you like- a hero’s trope even.
So, what makes a hero?
To be a hero you have to be brave or have a trigger point in the characters
life story that would have dramatic effects on their life’s outlook, hereby
making them brave or sometimes reckless and uncaring. Most commonly we find
hero’s saving others (whether that be a person, people, creatures or entire
worlds) from undesired or unacceptable circumstances. Most of these hero’s are
known in ya fantasy as the ‘chosen one’.
Here are some hero’s tropes?
- Knight in shining armour – meaning the perfect man coming along at
the perfect time to save someone from a bad situation
- The pure hero – someone bread/ destined for a cause
- The chosen one – someone whose destiny is to fulfil a prophecy
- The anti-hero – the one who is technically ‘bad’ but we empathise
with why they have become that way
Hero character forms;
- A prince/ princess
- The chosen one
- A king/ Queen
- An everyday person
- A creature fantasy or otherwise
- Someone/ something of influence
- Someone/ something with genetic differences
- Someone/ something whose considered unimportant
- Someone/ something with physical differences
- In short anyone has the potential to be a hero but not everyone
choses to be.
- A hero’s principles (classically) must be true, there heart pure
and their mind sound. But modern literature has opened up the
possibilities of heroism within a character’s formation whether they show
this by the tiniest or largest of acts, when needed or not.
